PayPal checkout without a creditcard
Tom Hamel
Hi there!
I posted this question on the BigCartel forum too, but I thought Id might be better to post it here.
I have a question regarding checking out with PayPal without having a credit card linked to the customer’s account. I myself use PayPal to pay for stuff on Ebay and such, and as a lot of people in my country including me (The Netherlands) do not own a creditcard, I linked my bank-account to my PayPal account. I think PayPal calls this feature 'E-Check', the payment takes a couple of business days to process, but it’s a pretty neat feature for those who do not own a creditcard.
I’m planning on selling digital item through my BigCartel store with Pulley. I was wondering if this way of payment will work for people using E-Checks. Will they receive the download link from Pulley when the payment hits my PayPal account, or do they get an instant link just like when using a credit card?
Thanks in advance! Kind regards,
Tom Hamel

The Pulley help area features an option to buy a $0.01 sample product, and I just tried buying that item with an account with no credit card attached. This is what PayPal says:
"This merchant only accepts instant payments . To continue with this purchase, add a bank account to your PayPal account. Or choose other options below."
The options given are: add a credit card or 'add funds from you back-account' wich takes 4 - 6 business days.
My question is the following: how does Pulley / Bigcartel react to to this kind of situation. Does the customer receive an instant download link right away or does the customer receive it after I collect their payment?
The merchant PayPal refers to would, in the future, be me. Will I be able to choose if I only accept instant payments?
Kind regards,

Your customers will receive a download link only after the payment has been processed through the PayPal checkout. When the payment is complete, they receive their customized order email and click the secure download links inside to obtain their products.
As long as you have "Make PayPal account optional for buyers" enabled in your PayPal settings, your customers can pay by card without needing to have a PayPal account. Otherwise, theyll want to log in to a PayPal account to use their preferred payment method.

Hi Rachel,
Thanks for you reply. A friend of mine just tested buying my digital product with a PayPal eCheck, wich takes an astonishing 9 (!!!) days to clear. Apparently PayPal does not see these kind of payments as high priority, if it would take 3 days it would be fine by me but 9 is just too much.
If I would be able to send out download links manually, Pulley would still be very interesting for me. But if it takes 9 days to buy a digital product in my store without a creditcard, Im afraid I wouldnt sell anything.

In those cases, the order will show as "pending" until the payment clears, at which time the file will be delivered. You customer will receive two e-mails, one saying the order is pending, and another one later when the payment clears containing the download link. Theres not currently a way to use the "resend download" button on pending orders, sorry.
